MAITENCILLO

Valparaíso Region

Since the end of 2015, Capital Azul Foundation have been working with the Maitencillo Artisanal Fishers Union in the establishment and implementation of a TURF-Reserve in the Territorial User Rights for Fisheries (TURF or AMERB, as abbreviated in Spanish), named Maitencillo V. Within an area of 108 hectares of TURF, the Maitencillo TURF-Reserve covers an area of 15 hectares, and is located very close to the Maitencillo cove, on La Caleta beach. This TURF-Reserve was inaugurated in November 2022 to encourage the participation of the towns of the commune of Puchuncaví to take care of this voluntary protection zone.

TIMELINE

VIDEO OF THE INAUGURATION

When the project (of TURF-Reserves) was presented to us, at first it was difficult because we, artisanal fishers, are used to living day by day, not to long-term projects, but we hope that those who come will sustain this.

President of the Maitencillo Artisanal Fishers Union
