The Cachagua Artisanal Fishers Union was the last to join Capital Azul Foundation’s TURF-Reserve program, after signing in September 2020 the Collaboration Agreement for the establishment of the Cachagua TURF-Reserve.
However, the union’s vocation towards conservation has always been latent in maintaining a close relationship with Cachagua Island, a Natural Monument and Nature Sanctuary that has the Humboldt Penguin as its emblematic species, such as the logo and the name of the union itself.
Historically, the union and its members have had a special bond with Las Cujas beach, where in the past there was a wharf and some boats that today are part of the past which the union seeks to reignite. Furthermore, very close by, in the intertidal pools of the area where the Cachagua TURF-Reserve is located today, many of the union members learned to swim as children, so for generations they have co-inhabited this marine-coastal ecosystem.
